Some of shibori’s most exquisite techniques create elegant patterns of blue while reserving larger areas of undyed fabric. Using indigo, we’ll explore these traditions. For instance, some are stitched and secured to a hard core or pipe, like shirokage (white shadow) and hinode (sunrise). The poetry continues with yanagi (willow) and midori (willow leaf), both bound to a soft core or rope. Even boshi (capping) has a tako or octopus variation and arashi (storm, pole wrapping) can be a net of diamonds. These are just a few of the possiblities.
