Marbling: Eco-Friendly Fabric Printing with Natalie Stopka
Fabric marbling is a wonderful blend of monotype printing, repeat pattern development, and color
play! In this three-day workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of fabric marbling, including
how to select materials and manipulate the chemistry of the marbling tray. We will focus on
eco-friendly ingredients, using gouache and soy for plastic-free washable prints. Natalie will share
designs inspired by the history of this elegant craft, as well as experimental approaches. Once
participants are familiar with the tools and best practices of the marbling studio, they’ll be free to
develop their collection of patterns!
Previous experience is not required!
Each student will have their own 16x20” marbling tray, and we’ll share larger scarf-length trays.
Materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring fabric or scarves they wish to
experiment with. Absorbent natural fibers including silk, cotton, and linen are good options for
marbling and may be previously dyed. Please thoroughly prewash all fabrics without fabric softener.
