A five-day creative retreat exploring the expressive fusion of encaustic, printmaking, and book arts

Join renowned artist Lorraine Glessner for an immersive exploration of encaustic wax, pigment, and paper — discovering how heat, translucency, and layering can build luminous, textural surfaces that tell powerful visual stories.

Over five days, you’ll work with encaustic mono-printing, mark-making, and mixed-media collage to create richly layered works on paper, and then transform selected pieces into handmade artist books. Lorraine’s process-based approach encourages experimentation, intuition, and curiosity — balancing deliberate composition with the spontaneity of wax, pigment, and flame.

This retreat is ideal for artists ready to push their materials into new, expressive territory.

Retreat Flow

Day 1 – Introduction to Encaustic Process
• Overview of materials, safety, and setup
• Techniques for mono-printing with encaustic medium
• Layering wax and pigment for texture and transparency

Days 2–4 – Surface, Texture & Mixed Media
• Combining collage, mark-making, and transfer methods
• Building depth through repetition and erasure
• Developing a body of small works on paper

Day 5 – The Artist Book Form
• Binding and folding techniques
• Creating a cohesive narrative sequence
• Finishing, presentation, and reflection

Studio Environment
Create in Aya’s spacious, light-filled fiber art studio in Stuart, Florida — a haven for mixed-media exploration. Each participant enjoys ample workspace (never more than two per 4′×8′ table), power and USB access, and all safety accommodations for encaustic processes.

Enjoy morning coffee, tea, and pastries, personalized lunch pickups, and a relaxed, collegial atmosphere that nurtures creativity.
