A five-day creative retreat exploring color, pattern, and layered depth through shibori and indigo

Discover the dialogue between color and pattern as you layer indigo dyeing over hand-dyed fabrics. Under the guidance of renowned fiber artist Carol Anne Grotrian, you’ll explore the interaction of hue, line, and texture that brings new energy and dimension to shibori work.

Working with fiber-reactive dyes, natural indigo, and stitched or bound resists, you’ll learn how transparent layers of color reveal surprising relationships — subtle, vibrant, and uniquely your own. Each piece becomes a conversation between planning and chance, control and flow.

Through demonstrations, hands-on instruction, and one-on-one guidance, Carol Anne helps you develop a personal approach to shibori that emphasizes design thinking, patience, and curiosity.

Retreat Flow

Day 1 – Foundations & Color Prep
Explore the relationships between color and value. Prepare and dye base fabrics using fiber-reactive dyes, creating your own color palette for the week.

Days 2–4 – Shibori & Indigo Immersion
Learn stitched, folded, and clamped resists, then layer indigo over your colored fabrics. Experiment with multiple dips, oxidation, and discharge for complex surfaces and dimensional depth.

Day 5 – Reflection & Reveal
Finish your final dye sessions, open your bundles, and share your discoveries. Discuss how color interaction can extend into future projects or quilts.

Studio Environment
Create in Aya’s spacious, light-filled fiber art studio in Stuart, Florida — designed for focused, hands-on exploration. Each participant enjoys ample workspace (never more than two per 4′×8′ table), power, USB access, and full use of indigo vats and dye equipment.

Enjoy fresh morning coffee, tea, and pastries, personalized lunch pickups, and an optional group dinner outing at a local waterfront restaurant.
