Depth and Mystery in Shibori with Doshi
🌀 Depth and Mystery in Shibori with Doshi
An immersive five-day creative retreat exploring color, texture, and transformation
“With Shibori, the dyer works in concert with the materials — not to overcome their limitations, but to allow them full expression. An element of the unexpected is always present. Chance and accident give life to the Shibori process, contributing to its special magic, appeal, and individual expression.” — Doshi
In this deeply exploratory retreat, Doshi guides artists through a week of discovery — moving beyond surface pattern into the expressive and spiritual depth of shibori. Working with silk and acid dyes, participants will explore color, texture, and imagery that shimmer with mystery and emotion.
Retreat Flow
Day 1 – Arrival & Introduction
Settle into the studio, meet your fellow artists, and begin your first shibori experiments. We’ll discuss inspiration, materials, and color relationships while preparing fabrics for the days ahead.
Days 2–4 – Immersion & Experimentation
Dive into a variety of techniques including:
• Shaped and stitched resist methods
• Layering multiple resist approaches for visual complexity
• Pour dyeing and immersion dyeing
• Discharge and over-dyeing for layered effects
• Color inspiration, mixing, and intuitive exploration
Each day combines guided instruction, independent studio time, and personal consultation with Doshi. Expect to work deeply, explore freely, and find joy in process and chance.
Day 5 – Reflection & Reveal
The week concludes with a final indigo or acid dye immersion, a group show-and-share, and an open conversation about process and meaning.
You’ll leave with a collection of richly textured silk fabrics — each alive with color, depth, and the quiet rhythm of the maker’s hand.
Studio Environment
Aya Fiber Studio in Stuart, Florida is designed specifically for fiber artists — spacious, sunlit, and fully equipped. Each participant enjoys ample workspace (never more than two per 4′×8′ table) with electric power, USB access, indigo vats, and dye facilities.
Begin each morning with fresh coffee, tea, and pastries, and enjoy personalized lunch pickups from favorite local cafés. During retreat weeks, the class often gathers for a group dinner at a waterfront restaurant — an evening of connection and conversation by the sea.
This retreat invites you to slow down, experiment deeply, and rediscover the meditative beauty of process.
