Intro to Shibori and Indigo with Suzanne Connors

One-Day Shibori & Indigo Workshop

Fold. Bind. Dip. Reveal.
Spend a full day immersed in the quiet magic of indigo and the timeless art of shibori resist dyeing.
In this hands-on workshop, we will explore traditional Japanese shibori techniques using a prepared pre-reduced indigo vat. Pre-reduced indigo allows us to focus our energy on design, folding, stitching, clamping, and binding — while still experiencing the alchemy of watching cloth emerge from the vat green and transform into deep, luminous blue before your eyes.
Throughout the day you will learn:
• The history and cultural roots of shibori
• How to fold, pleat, wrap, stitch, and bind cloth to create resist patterns
• Proper dipping techniques and vat care
• How oxidation builds rich layers of blue
• How to rinse, reveal, and finish your work
We’ll work on cotton and other natural fibers, creating a collection of sample studies that can later be incorporated into larger textile projects — art quilts, garments, book arts, surface design, or simply treasured as stand-alone pieces.
This workshop is ideal for beginners curious about indigo as well as experienced artists who want a dedicated day to deepen their practice. The process is slow, rhythmic, and meditative — hands stained blue, conversations flowing, and the quiet anticipation of each reveal.
You’ll leave with finished samples, a solid understanding of working with pre-reduced indigo, and the confidence to continue exploring this ancient dye tradition at home.
Come spend a day in the blue. 💙
