Sculptural Stitchery with Susan Stover

Merging the detailed nature of stitching and the physical, three-dimensional aspects
of sculpture, is the focus of this workshop. We’ll examine how traditional and nontraditional
hand stitching methods can play a powerful role, conceptually and materially,
in sculpture. By introducing a rich historical context, inspiration from contemporary
artists, and a tangible experience, we’ll explore new possibilities for your work.
Some of the possibilities are:
- Stitched fabric forms
- Embroidered reliefs
- Stitching with wire
- Textures with thread
- Hanging sculptures and installations
- Alternative materials (plastic, cardboard, wood, metal, etc.)
We will also look at issues such as: reuse and repurpose of textiles; memory and
history; material voice and relationships; gender and craft; stitching as construction;
movement and flexibility; interplay of line and form.
Stitching with sculpture opens up a dialogue between materiality,
time, tradition, and identity. It allows artists to explore soft, intimate, and labor-intensive
practices within the realm of working three-dimensionally. The fusion of stitching and
sculpture offers participants a rich language to express complex, nuanced ideas and
invites a fresh perspective on both forms. Open to all levels with an openness to
exploration.
