Why Not Joomchi? with Jiyoung Chung

The Art of Joomchi: Korean Handmade Paper with Soul
Discover the ancient magic of Joomchi, a centuries-old Korean technique that transforms humble paper into richly textured, leather-like works of art—using nothing but water, motion, and your own two hands.
Dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392), Joomchi began as a way to craft pouches, rain garments, and everyday treasures. Today, it’s a tactile, meditative process that bridges tradition with contemporary art.
In this immersive workshop, you’ll:
- Learn the fascinating history and cultural roots of Joomchi
- Explore the expressive possibilities of Hanji (Korean mulberry paper)
- Use layering, agitation, and your hands to create strong, painterly surfaces
- Watch your paper age gracefully—becoming soft, sculptural, and almost leather-like over time
Whether you’re drawn to fiber art, printmaking, or sculpture, this is your chance to breathe new life into ancient tradition—and create works that hold both memory and texture in every fiber.
